Art on the Waterfront

June 16, 2010

Who doesn’t like spending a hot summer day at the waterfront with a nice ocean breeze to cool you off?  This past weekend, NC Maritime Museum hosted a wonderful day at the waterfront park in Southport, NC for artist vendors with their 2nd Saturday event.

A celebration of the arts, culture and history, North Carolina museums and historic sites are teaming up with artists to promote the many cultural opportunities found throughout the state .  On the 2nd Saturday of June, July and August, historic sites across North Carolina are hosting artists to show their work.

As my first opportunity to show my work independently, I am very pleased with the event in Southport.  Steve made me a wonderful set of racks to hang my work that fit nicely under the canopy.  It is so important that fiber art is not exposed to the sun, and this system worked perfectly, allowing enough space to shade my art, myself and 2 or 3 patrons.

And my friend Joe made some wonderful copper wire hangers that fit right over the rods!  He is ingenious!  I will bring a bit more wire next time, as some pieces were hard to keep straight in the breeze.

On July 1oth I will be at 2nd Saturday at Brunswick Town Colonial Historic site, just north of Southport, NC at  the mouth of the Cape Fear river.  That event will be all about the textile arts and I will  be demonstrating some of my techniques, as well as showcasing Operation Kid Comfort.

On August 14th, I will be part of 2nd Saturday at Fort Fisher National Historic Landmark.  The site is across from the beach and not far from the North Carolina Aquarium.  Make a day of it with something for everyone in the family, better yet…go for the weekend!

If you can make it, be sure to stop by and say hello.  It’s always cooler at the coast, so come on down!
